Over the past few years, we have been able to start trapping. One of the biggest lessons we have learned from trapping is to always have a trail camera set up to record what happens at your traps. This has helped us know if coyotes are even interested in our set, if dogs are going to be an issue, and if people can find our traps. You also get the added benefit of seeing it all come together in the end! Below is a video of us catching a coyote with a foot trap on our trail camera!
This is the camera we used!
Coyote Trapped
Trapping with trail cameras also lets you show people that foothold traps rarely hurt animals that get caught in them. The doe below registers something touched it and then gets scared when it realizes something is on its foot!
Trail cameras also let you know if someone steals your trap! We got the footage below of a guy removing our trap. The nice thing about having trail cameras around your traps is that you can report and show what happened to your local game wardens.
One of the main benefits of trapping with a trail camera is you get to see what is actually coming into your sets. This has been a tremendous help to me. It has stopped me from catching dogs and a mountain lion. The mountain lion below walked right over our trap and smelled our lure. Luckily, we knew that the deer and coyotes were coming by first and most likely set our traps off before the mountain lion got to them.
Trapping with trail cameras also lets you see if you have boiled your traps good enough to remove their scent. If you have not boiled them good enough, the coyotes will come right up to your trap, smell it, and then run away. You might have touched it with your hands while setting it or it needed to boil it longer. If this happens, dig it up and boil it again.

Trapping with Cellular Trail Cameras
Another awesome feature of trail cameras is that you can get a live steam of your traps whenever there is something or someone there. This means if you have an animal that, if given an hour, might escape, you can hurry to the animal before it gets away.
